Prowadzenie linii, dzielenie płaszczyzn, tworzenie znaczeń to podstawowe i pierwotne funkcje rysowania.

The basic and primary functions of drawing are to establish lines, divide planes and create meanings. It may require high skills and experience – as in technical or detailed realistic drawing – and may be quite difficult to master. But there is also a different and a more common kind of drawing: automatic scribbling, plotting multiple lines and circles during meetings, phone calls or while waiting. These are not deliberate gestures; they result from the natural need to express, to calm down or remain active in some way.

In his most recent works, Michał Smandek confronts works of art with nature. He chooses two extreme creative methods, which are parallel and concurrent here. First, he documents manifestations of natural phenomena, giving the impression of conscious actions. Second, he interferes with the landscape in such a subtle and delicate way that it is impossible to tell if we are dealing with the work of man or of nature.

The blurring of the border between performance and documentation results in a more objective approach to the shape. Without knowing anything about the intent, purpose or awareness of the potential author, we focus on the formal side of the drawing on sand. Smandek indirectly postulates a rejection of the modern excessive production of objects as works of art for the observation and appropriation of situations with "a high coefficient of art".

In addition to documenting drawings found in nature (made with or without the help of the author), Smandek also proposes machines for drawing and plotting lines in space. He uses heavy materials, their properties and physical principles, to create sculptures that are situated between the drawing tool and the drawing itself. This time the role of the author is clear and obvious, but the outcome would not be possible without the natural phenomena that maintain the actual shape of the found sign.

The exhibition consists of the Radius Work series of photographs (Sahara, Morocco), Knife Work photography (Gobi, Mongolia) and Rhombus photography (Khenifiss, Morocco) – elements of the Manual Rest project – and the sculptures Tightener, Hard Worker and Halfdrawer.

SHOWOFF - PROGNOSTYK / PROGNOSTIC

Prace były pretekstem, by wyruszyć w podróż, a nie celem samym w sobie.

The Prognostic project is a series of objects whose meaning depends on the space where they are found. Here, this space is the volcanic cones of Italy, against whose backdrop simple, abstract sculptures made by Michał Smandek are photographed. Appropriately cropped, these objects demonstrate the moment of eruption – predicting an event that will take place in the near or more distant future. These works were a pretext to travel, rather than an objective in itself. They were the most important equipment, on which all the difficulties of the journey had an effect, as it did on their owner who carried them. The project looks at the impact of the forces of nature on human activity, and vice-versa – human interference in nature. It examines the subject of catastrophe as spectacular phenomenon, in the face of which, for all the support that technology gives us, we are powerless.

THE HERD

250 balonów, sznurek, taśma klejąca / 250 balloons, string, tape

Orkhon Valley, Mongolia

Hodowca dba o stado i każde pojedyncze zwierzę. Poi, karmi, wypasa. Codziennie przelicza stado, chroni przed zimnem i upałem, czyści oraz leczy. Hodowca jest więc pasterzem, opiekunem, przewodnikiem. W instalacji The Herd Michał Smandek ukazuje relację między opiekunem a obdarzonymi opieką.

In the Mongolian steppe animal breeders depend on the herd and the herd depends on breeders. This (inter-)dependence is the most important condition of nomadic life. The breeders take care of the herd as a whole  as well  as of the individual animal. The breeder provides water, fodder and graze. He counts his herd every day, protects it from cold and heat, cleans and heals the animals. So the breeder is the shepherd, the guardian and the guide. In the installation The Herd Michal Smandek shows the relationship between the guardian and the ones endowed with care. He chose matter which he has to take care of, look after, repair and complete. Dozens of connected black balloons symbolize the herd. Michal Smandek has to check if some of the balloons are not separated from the herd by the wind - his function is similar to working with a herd, where all actions are repeated every day. Therefore, this art installation is a performance which involves protective work with matter - a delicate balloon and the air trapped inside, both of which interact with severe climate conditions of the steppe. The Herd symbolizes this protectiveness. It is a tribute to the good shepherd. So Michal Smandek is a shepherd of the abstract - his black balloons evoke and deny Malevitch's square.
